Lao Sea Games stadium to be complete in time

An official has confirmed that the construction of the sport complex to be used for the 25th SEA Games in 2009 in Laos will be completed in time.

Although the construction of the project is only 25 percent complete, the project manager is confident that all facilities will be built according to schedule.

Sports complex construction manager, Mr Kiengkham Phoutchanhthavongsa said yesterday that all facilities would be complete by May next year.

The construction work of the 125-hentare site began on October 28 at a cost of more than US$80 million.

“We can guarantee that all the work will be finished by the deadline and will be handed over to the organising committee by May next year, when the complex will be fully operational,” Mr Kiengkham said.

He said the rainy season would not be a problem because by that time the work would all be taking place under the roof.

So far, some 670 workers, including engineers, are working on the construction site.

The complex comprises two indoor stadiums, each with a seating capacity of 3,000, an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a shooting range, and a warm-up area.

The main stadium will have a seating capacity of 20,000 and will be used for the football and track and field events, and also for the opening and closing ceremonies.

The complex is being built through a joint cooperation project between the government of the Lao PDR and the China Development Bank.
